The Paisley pear is a versatile and truly inspirational motif with an asymmetric shape that can be manipulated to create a wealth of different designs. As an amalgamation of several motifs, a paisley pear (often called a Welsh pear) can be filled with veins similar to those found in bent leaf motifs and completed by the addition of a spiral at the narrow end.

Mrs Thomas used her paisley motif in a semi-upright position and rotated it by 22.5 degrees around the centre of the quilt. The sixteen paisleys formed a large circle.
